ENID. OKLAHOMA INFORMATION

I have blogged about a lot of places; however, I have never blogged about my hometown of Enid, Oklahoma.  After finishing high school in 1971, I moved away to attend college and have never returned to live (I have visited many times) until about 3 months ago when we returned to our hometown to help our aging parents.  Over the past 3 months, I have noticed that there are many changes; however, in general it is still the same town I left over 38 years ago.

Like most cities, the downtown area has changed dramatically since my early years in Enid. What was a thriving area of shopping stores has turned into an area of service-oriented businesses (especially attorneys).  Most of the stores moved to the mall and since that time my favorite local stores have gone out of business.  The mall now consists of a few specialty stores and 3 anchors – Dillard’s, JC Penny’s and Sears.  I have noticed that most local people drive to Oklahoma City to shop.

As far as living in Enid, this is a great place to raise a family.  Enid has a very good public school system and two colleges – Northern Oklahoma College and Northwestern Oklahoma State University.  I think the greatest asset of living in Enid is its Midwest Values.  You can tell that there is a strong sense of values relating to family, religion, community pride and patriotism; which, has been lost in much of the country.

The one thing that I would like to see is more entertainment options, especially for young adults (This is why at our most recent high school reunions, only about 1/3 of the past students still reside in Enid).  On most Friday and Saturday nights there really is not many options to choose from.  Enid does have a triple A baseball team and a multiplex movie theater; however, during the winter there is no baseball and the hot summer movie season is over.  There are more entertainment and attraction options for adults and younger children.  Below I will highlight these options.

1. The Enid Symphony Orchestra, Douglas Newell, Music Director, is a semi-professional orchestra comprised of musicians from within a 120-mile radius.
2. The Gaslight Theatre presents entertaining stage productions regularly in the refurbished old Criterion movie theater just a block north of the downtown square.
3. The NOC Enid Community Band has two ensembles, a jazz band and a concert band.
4. The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center , 507 S. 4th Street – Dedicated to telling the inspiring story of the 1893 Land Run and further development of northwest Oklahoma .
5. Veterans Museum. The Enid Woodring Airport Wall of Honor & Veterans Park was dedicated in 2000 and is located at the Enid Woodring Regional Airport. The Wall is in honor of the men & women of the armed forces of the United States.
6. Come play and learn with us at Leonardo’s Discovery Warehouse!  The Discovery Warehouse is an old red brick grocery warehouse that has been converted into a hands-on art and science museum for the whole family.
7. The outdoor area–Adventure Quest–is the world’s largest community-built playgrounds/science parks.  Adventure Quest is an outdoor science and learning center/giant playground across the street from The Discovery Warehouse.
8. If trains fascinate you, you will enjoy the Railroad Museum of Oklahoma located at 702 N. Washington.  Within the museum compound, there are eight cabooses from railroads that have served Enid, a baggage car, motor cars, a three-dome tank car, a 50-ton engine, a Champlin tank car, a Frisco 1519 Steam Engine, a Frisco boxcar and hopper car.
9. The Southern Heights Heritage Center and Museum, located 616 Leona Mitchell Blvd., provides life-learning opportunities in appreciation of African Americans, their ancestry, heritage and history.

Enid, Oklahoma is located about 95 miles north-northwest of Oklahoma City and about 120 miles west of Tulsa.  Enid’s population is listed at 47,045 and is the Garfield County Seat (Garfield County Population is listed at 57,813).  The per capita income for Garfield County in 2003 was $27,856 and the median household income was $34,356.  In 2000, the median home value in Enid was $59,200 and the median rent was $437.00 per month.  Home values have increased dramatically since 2000; however, there are no official data showing the new values.

I grew up in Enid and had fond memories of the grandfather taking our family out to eat at the Tia Juana on Sunday after church, which all come back to me on my most recent trip back to Enid.   Understand, this was not my first trip back to Enid (it has been over 35 years since I moved away), actually I have been back over 20 times; however, this is my first time back to the Tia Juana.

Yes, the Tia Juana is still there.  It has been in the same location since 1948 and still based on outward appearance looks like a dive.  This is where looks can be deceiving.

My wife and I decided to try the Tia Juana (it was here first trip) after all this time to see if it was as good as I rememered.  We went for lunch and had the chicken fried steak.   Simply put, this is one of the best chicken fried steak we have ever eaten.  We were telling her father about the Tia Juana and he asked if we wanted to go back and try the real steak.  That night we ordered three medium sized T-Bones for about $18.00 per person.  We all agreed that this was definitely the best steak in Enid and as far as that goes in Oklahoma.  The steak was very tender and was had excellent taste.  We will definitely go back to the Tia Juana on our next trip back to Enid.  I can’t wait.

Cattlemen’s Steakhouse Review – Oklahoma City – Oklahoma

We have heard for years how great the Cattlemen’s Steakhouse in Oklahoma City is.  Family and friends have raved about the food, so we took the opportunity to check it out on a Saturday afternoon.  The restaurant is located in the stockyards historic area of the city.  Lots of real life cowboys wander the streets. Cattlemen’s is easy to get to and has lots of parking near the restaurant. 

We lucked out and only had to wait about 10 minutes to get a table.  Living in Austin and waiting for up to an hour to be seated at resaturants made this a unique experience.  The meal started out with rolls and a Cattlemen’s salad with their signature dressing (If you like ranch salad dressing, you’ll love it).  We ordered onion rings for our table to share which disappeared very quickly.  Everyone in our party had a steak and baked potato.  We ordered a Cattlemen’s strip sirloin, a small filet and 2 rib eyes.  The steaks were cooked from medium to well done.  Each steak was tender and juicy whether it was medium or well done.  The test for a good steakhouse is to get a steak ordered well done tender and not burnt.  Cattlemen’s lives up to its rich history of the place for steak in Oklahoma City.

The steak dinners for 4 with soft drinks and tip came to $100.00.  This is definitely not a cheap place for steak but is average in price as compared to other restaurants.  I will make it a point when passing through Oklahoma City again to stop in for a good meal.

The Waterloo Ice House is a great place to go on Sunday.  You can have a great breakfast/lunch at a moderate price.  My husband and I enjoy the 6th. and Lamar Blvd. location since it’s only a few minutes from our home.  Parking is usually good as long as you get there by noon.

We have had lunch at the Waterloo Ice House several times but find the food not to be so great.  We do, however, enjoy their breakfast items.  I usually order the Hill Country Breakfast or the Waterloo Migas.  If I order the migas I always get a side of hash browns which are the best in Austin (crispy not soggy).  My husband enjoys the blueberry pancakes and scrambled eggs.  The atmosphere is very casual and the service is good.

If your looking for a good, fast meal at a moderate price, Waterloo is the place for you.  You can get 2 meals and 2 cups of coffe with tip for $25.00 making it a very affordable choice.
